SOMERS, Elizabeth Lowers or (I2223)

653 !Name: Wilheid, is from Norvad L. Johnson ([email protected]WILHEID, Anna Maria (I632)

654 !Name: Willem is how it is shown in the old records.

!Birth: [email protected] says he was born: abt 1616, Lemgo, Amt Lemgo,
Leppe, Germany. A deposition before the Court of Kingston on August 26, 1761
says he was about 55 years old.

!Biography: An interesting biography of Willem was written by Christopher
Brooks in which he states that Willem was the progenitor of three families in
early Dutch New York and New Jersey: The Traphagen family, the Burhans family
through his daughter Helena and the Ostrander family through his daughter
Rebecca. All I know about Willem is thanks to Mr. Brooks.

Brooks, Christopher, The Life of Willem Jansen Traphagen, (unpublished
biography, 4 pages, libraries of the CompuServe Genealogy Forum: file iname
TRAPHAGEN.ZIP) (FILE 72)

He appears to have been a rather fiery man who left possessions Lemgo, in the
old German County of Lippe, to settle in the new world sometime between the
years of 1647 and 1658. The death of his first wife Jannetje sometime around
1657 led to a second marriage to Aeltje Dirksen soon after. She evidently died
shortly after bearing him a child, for he remarried again in 1661 to Joosje
Willemsen. During this time he was involved in several lawsuits that resulted
from debts.

In 1661, at the urging of the Dutch governor to outlying farmers who were
subject to Indian attacks to form towns, Willem joined with twenty-two other
men to form the town of Bushwick, which was on Long Island not far across the
river from New Amsterdam. (Today Wushwick Ave. runs east and west in New York
City sort of dividing Brooklyn and Queens.) By 1664 Willem was in trouble with
the local magistrate for calling him a 'false judge' and later that year his
further trouble with the same judge resulted in his being banished from the
town.

Not much is known about him for several years until he appears in Kingston, NY
in 1671 where he gives a deposition which outlines his family connections in
sort of a will, ...'whereas the aforesaid Willem Trophagen is Considering the
approach of death, therefore he has deemed it proper to make known the
Conditions of his family...'. If he was close to death, he beat it and
survived, apparently, another 28 years, although his deathdate of 1699 is not
conclusive. He appears a number of times in the court and land records of
Kingston from 1671 to 1688 and his will survives dated February 16, 1685.
